Savory – Satureja Sp.

  • Culinary use

Savory is an herb that adds a delicate touch to vegetables and is used in vegetable soups, pies and meat dishes. Savory is particularly appreciated in the Provence area of France and is employed in the preparation of liqueurs and bitters.

  • Medicinal use

Savory infusions are used to cure problems with digestion, intestinal bloating and bronchitis. Decoctions of this wondrous herb have invigorating and cleansing effects on the skin. Apparently, savory mixed with sage, rosemary and lemon verbena has an interesting aphrodisiac effect.

  • Interesting facts

Until about one hundred years ago, savory was known as “poor persons’ pepper”, as it was a valid substitute for, the once extremely expensive, pepper.
